if you know me, you know how i love street fighter. 1up had the chance to play SF4 (still in early development) and talk to producer on the project. the video below is an interesting 20-minute discussion about the current state of the game which also features, for first time, some gameplay footage. i'm quite skeptical about the 3d art even though gameplay is 2d but from what i can see, the game is far from finished so anything can still change. only time will tell. hadoken!

Karma seems to be an underlying theme as Mr. Rae and Teckzilla (Ill Alliance) revisit the main 007 theme as a cautionary tale of the gangster life starring a 2007 Lazarus slain and resurrected in the dreams of his murderer and like the hook says “Karma is a bitch/ Your past sins are resurrected/ going for a swim?/ the waters are shark infested/ who let the beast out/ they live in all of us/ heres a twist to the tale of the man called lazarus”.

Deck The Nexus and Enigma (Str8 Buttah) trade razor sharp darts on Intellects (007 mindstate). 08 Resolutions

so i disappeared again. i assure you it's was all for a good cause - i've been working on a hotly-anticipated project that i shall not mention on this blog so as not to attract attention from crazy fanboys. 2007 wasn't bad at all but could've been much better. hence, i've got myself 8 resolutions for 2008.

1. get back to updating this blog frequently (pretty obvious)
2. find more time for my baby AI engine - simulacra x
3. keep in touch with friends on and offline (i should really get over being busy/tired all the time)
4. do exercises every morning before work (to fix my back problem)
5. perfect the art of street fighting, 3rd strike style
6. read at least, one novel.
7. watch a live juve game.
8. find music, listen to more music, make music

last time i made new year resolutions, i was probably like 7 yrs old. that gives you an idea of how serious i take this stuff. this blog needed an update anyway. oh well, i think the most important thing i need this 2008, after being drained in 2007 is inspiration to keep going. happy new year!

been a while but rotation must continue. enter soweto kinch's "a life in the day of B19 - tales of the tower block" - another jazz/hip hop (UK) hybrid album. to be honest, i've never really gotten into UK hip hop and i don't even know where to begin to search for quality stuff. so when a workmate (who i introduced to madlib) gave me the album a month ago, i was skeptical but ended up surprised. boy, there's so much good shit out there i don't know about.

this is soweto's 2nd album, released in 2006. it is the first instalment of a two-part concept album documenting the lives of three inner-city birmingham men which IMHO is way nicer than his first album "conversations with the unseen". the quality i admire most in an emcee is his ability to tell stories and that's what this album does superbly. it's a concept album, so you'll have to listen to it from track 1 to 15 in that order, to really feel it - well, probably only the jazz-tuned mind.
my favourite tracks: everybody raps (13) - maybe its because of the public announcer-rapper with a hardcore yoruba accent spitting rhymes, i don't know. padz (7) - this is a parody of mtv cribs showing how material and silly the world is. love gamble (5) - the story of the misfortunes of adrian. word-from-your-moms ish.

inspired by dart adam's originator series, and helped by my lack of originality, i'm just gonna blog about early influences that resulted in me getting hooked on football (thats soccer, yanks), music, and computers/games. my 3 passions.

part uno: football. two people are responsible for this: my pops, and maradona. i can't remember what age i was when i began to understand the purpose of a box with bright flickering images which they called a TV (maybe 3), but every weekend i was intrigued at why my dad would spend the whole day staring at that box supposedly watching some dudes kicking some ball around. that was football and the coolest part was of course was the scream "GOAL!" and the happy and sometimes sad faces after. by fate i was hooked. my pops had a freaking library of VHS tapes filled up with complete world cup matches from beyond my time and i was literally forced to watch them cos i liked bright lights and that TV stole the show. my dad explained the rules of the game and i was in.
and then there was diego. first, a fact and a shame: i actually started supporting argentina before my own country, nigeria. at age 5, i could name every player in the '86 world cup argentine team meanwhile i was often mistaking our flying eagles for our green eagles (blame the miracle of dammam for that). shameful i know.

every budding kid footballer always has a hero to look up to. at that time, maradona was the best in the world so naturally he was my hero. it's a known fact that the guy was a f**king genius so i won't bore you. he was truly an "i" in a "team". argentina's confirmation as world football superpowers and napoli's rise from mediocrity are obvious testaments to that. during my years under-10, when i got the chance, i'd watch my dad's argentina world cup tapes, watching all of maradona's moves carefully and then practice them when/where i could: in school, on the streets (my legs are infested with scars), in the house (living room/bedroom regularly smashing light bulbs, picture frames, anything breakable).
maradona got me playing and i learned my early moves from him. my best footballer yet, though, is zidane. from age 15, i improved immensely and understood the game better by just watching zidane. i so badly wanted to be a professional footballer because of that dude. when he joined juve in '96 which had only just become my favorite team, i realised i was a juventino for life. but hey this post is supposed to about originators, and it's getting long, and i'm tired, so i'll stop. you get the point.
oh BTW, i kick ass on winning eleven aka pro evo. though i don't play as much as i used to, niggys know, i'm a legend! 1997 - 2004 i was unfukwitable!

...that i'm particularly looking forward to:

1. ghost in the shell: S.A.C. solid state society

anybody who knows me, knows i'm a huge fan of the ghost in the shell franchise. i've seen every movie, every S.A.C episode, and no one is gonna stop me from seeing this. for those who don't know, it's cyberpunk material and you can find a good description of it on wikipedia. and yes, the wachowski bros. borrowed a lot of ideas from the original GITS movie for their movie, the matrix. it's the continuation of the hit stand alone complex (S.A.C.) series which has only 2 seasons. this time it's just a movie which is a bit disappointing - i want another season! already released in japan last year (and subbed too by internet fans), the movie will be released in the US on july 3rd. i've no idea when/if it'll hit UK.

2. aqua teen hunger force colon movie film for theaters
after the boston bomb scare early this year, i'm sure by now everybody must have heard of these guys. ATHF is my favorite series on adultswim and has been going on for about 4 seasons. now adultswim has made a movie based on the series which will be released later this week, april 13th. if you like stupid/sick/sexual/violent humor, then be entertained with master shake, meatwad, frylock, and carl. series to movies conversions usually suck. i just hope it doesn't won't.

3. die hard 4.0

you thought it was over? it's die-hard baby! this series will never die. mcClane is back again fighting terrorists again - internet terrorists this time. our favorite ~~cop~~ ex-cop battles hackers! this one looks hot! seen all the movies, played all the games, the die-hard trilogy sits as one of my favorite action movie series ever.

been listening to this album a lot while coding, at work. when it comes to hybrid theories, this one sure delivers - fusing mainstream jazz with hip-hop, R&B, rock, reggae, plus more.

buckshot lefonque was a musical group project of the man in the pic, branford marsalis. this is the first album of the group, released in '94. from what i've read, it wasn't well received then. i think the people of '94 smoked crack then if they weren't feeling this ish - especially since it had a lot of premo on it. me? i was too young to feel it. jazz wasn't my thing.
top tracks? the whole album is tight and fela gets sampled on i know why the caged bird sings (3).

Italian Football: The British Propaganda

after reading unconfirmed reports about the punishment of the players in the valencia-inter CL brawl, i was wondering why maicon would get a 4-month ban. so i did a little digging on youtube for video evidence and found this instead:

i was totally disgusted by the ignorance of these so-called pundits. luckily the guy who uploaded the video posted his opinions which mirrors mine:
"This is Sky Sports' reaction following the match in the UK, which was their main game on Sky Sports 2. Presenter Richard Keys with (left to right) Andy Gray, Jamie Redknapp and Gary McAllister. Here are a few points I picked up from the video...
With 01.02secs gone on the video: McAllister says these "shocking" scenes are like those pictures that come from South American football. He then says the pictures clearly show several South American players invloved - Argentina etc.
01.28secs: Keys says, "[Marco] Materazzi's always involved isn't he?" Not conclusive on the video, Materazzi was in the challenge just before the whistle went, but left before the brawl kicked off?
02.00secs: They then all laugh and 'try' to name the South American/Argentinian players involved - "Another Argentinian, and another...".
04.08secs: Gray 'feels a little sorry for Valencia'. And he talks with Keys about Inter "kicking lumps" out of Arsenal at Highbury a few years ago. Keys adds there were "two or three" Inter players sent off as well for their poor discipline. Reading the official UEFA website, Arsenal and Inter have only met in the Group Stages - twice in the 2003-04 season. Inter won 3-0 at Highbury (no yellow or red cards) and then lost 5-1 at the San Siro (again no yellow or red cards). Looks like Keys mixed things up with Juventus' match at Highbury - just shows his knowledge?
06.19sec: 'Burdisso and [Dejan] Stankovic started it kicking each other' - they're on the same team Gray! He saw the number 5 on the back of Marchena's shirt, and somehow concluded it's Stankovic (who also wears 5 at Inter).
08.15secs: Redknapp says, "Italian football, I mean its just Italian football full stop at the moment, isn't it?" He concluded later, "Italian football at the moment is in complete decline and this is adding to it. Discusting!"
The video clip ends after that discussion. They then quickly rounded up all the rest of the evenings matches. Claire Tomlinson (reporter) did her round-up of results and handed back to Keys who said... "Yes Inter out tonight, and if there's any justice they should be out of this competition for some time to come as well." So he decides the punishments, banning just Inter, does he?"

and this comment on the video by lasanliburd:
"racists! what justifies their rant against south americans?! in the league cup final, arsenal and chelsea were all over each other and when the dust settled, only five Africans were suspended!! did no one from the FA see Caravalho, Fabregas or Lampard's contribution among many?! And Adebayor was fined more than Spain's racist coach was. Nuff said!"

first, let me make things clear, the brawl started with marchena insulting burdisso (i guess that's ok when you're not italian and the victim isn't zidane). burdisso then got angry and tried to retaliate but was held back by players from both teams. then that bitch, navarro sucker-punched burdisso and well, if i was an inter player i would have chased that coward myself.
now i so f**king hate inter and was very glad valencia knocked them out but i hate ignorant f**kers even more. as a fan of italian football i've witnessed countless times how most british football pundits continue to slate italian football and stereotype italians as "cheats" and "thugs" (even after winning the world cup fair and square). now i agree italian football is going through probably it's worst season ever but that doesn't give anyone license to talk trash.
in the video, those clowns kept insisting UEFA should ban inter (nobody mentions valencia). if it was a british team, UEFA would ban blah blah blah. still UEFA bent rules to allow a 5th english team in the CL last year. FIFA bent rules to allow mascherano join liverpool (his 3rd club in one year). uhm... couple that with mr. blatter refusing to present the world cup to italy. seems to me something is going on here.
i've had friends (mostly english football fans) who know nothing about calciopoli make jokes about how we bribed referees with cash when infact no referee saw a single lira from us. none of them don't even know that the scandal started from a phone call. they just heard some piece of trash information from the british media.
still yet to find out what maicon did. oh well, FORZA JUVE! :)

GDC: LittleBigPlanet

GDC's come and gone (5th-9th) with lots of presentations, tutorials, tech talk, industry debates, tech and game demos, etc. if you missed it, you can get the scoop over at gamasutra. for me the most exciting piece was a game demo at sony's keynote. with all the negative vibe of the PS3, that was not expected at all. if you're a next-gen enthusiast then you already know what i'm on about. it's probably the now the most anticipated PS3 title - littlebigplanet by media molecule (damn, the UK has talented studios), the guys behind ragdoll kungfu. with it's integrated content-creation tools, physics-based gameplay, very impressive graphics, and an eventual online community, this game is sure to last for a long time. if you haven't seen it, please please please watch this.

it's even more impressive when you understand the science behind it. a physics programmer's dream game. the kinda of stuff i wanna do. oh simulacra, hurry up and code yourself :)

Simulacra X: Update (CUDA/CTM)

well, my new "compatialbe" battery for my hp laptop finally arrived from hong kong a couple of days back so it's gonna be a linux install/set-up weekend. still not decided on which distro to install yet but i'm leaning towards vector linux.

simulacraX is still moving at a snail's pace. most of the low-level stuff is in place but not implemented (stuff such as the memory management, window management, timing... are all waiting on linux). the maths library is virtually done though. speaking of maths. i came across this just over a week ago. apparently nvidia along with their sworn rivals, amd/ati, are seriously making efforts to turn the GPU into a complete coprocessor by providing low-level access to their hardware and SDKs for development. basically there is nvidia's CUDA and amd/ati's CTM. CUDA provides a C-based tool chain for development. CTM on the other hand is much more open and low-level, allowing programmers access via assembly. IMO, this is some good shit as this allows programmers to write complex and computational algorithms for the hardware using C rather than using shaders (which are primarily for graphics algorithms). this means programmers can write libraries for stuff like AI on the GPU quite easily as well as physics (infact this is as good as having a programmable PPU). and with microsoft's vista up and about, GPUs will be invading computers near you and typically, developers will want to take advantage of these monster processors if they can help it.
well, i'm looking at how to take advantage of this for simulacraX - oh yeah! it's a bit tricky though, because the issue of platform-indepent code comes into play. these APIs are strictly for their respective hardware so logically the best way to go would be to use CTM, and implement a version of CUDA for the amd/ati cards but i have no assembly programming skills. besides a CUDA implementation is a big project on it's own i guess. with my C/C++ background, CUDA is much more easier for me to get into. i just downloaded both the CUDA programming guide and the CTM techincal reference manual... maybe i'll read them tommorrow... zzz

BTW, first we had a morpheme release party thursday and boy, did i get f**ked up soaking my head in multiple pints of kirin and hoegaarden. nasty stuff - i still haven't fully recovered.

it's march already?! enter the humble magnificent, jewish-american hip hop head (dj/producer/emcee), edan. influenced in his childhood by the beatles, his style is a blend of 60s rock, funk, and hip hop (now that's some psychedelic ish!). Beauty And The Beat, released in '05, is probably his best release yet but i wouldn't know cos this is his only stuff i've heard. but i know one thing - dope beats, dope rhymes, dope mixing! my top tracks? in no order: i see colors (3), fumbling over words that rhyme (4), torture chamber (6).

Juve Rant

with signs that juve will be back to the top-flight next season, there has been a lot of transfer talk. one thing that bothers me is our recently "rumored" transfer targets. they are either defenders (samuel, heintze etc) or strikers (klose, toni, saviola, etc). what freaking happened to the creative midfield department? i thought this was a crapello problem. milan got kaka, now they've got another kaka in the making, gourcuff. freaking hell! juve, deschamps show more ambition.

ever since '96 when i officially became a juve fan, we've had some of the best players hold our midfield down, producing 2 world and 2 european footballer awards. some names include: moeller, jugovic, lombardo, paulo sousa, davids, deschamps, tacchinardi, zidane, nedved. nedved, 34, though still a performer is past his prime now. shouldn't all the transfer talk be about his possible replacement? pesonally, camoranesi, 30, frustrates me a lot as he seems to have a lot of bad days as well as good days and his supposed replacement, marchionni, doesn't impress me all that much. i know we desperately need solid defenders, no doubt, but i don't understand why much of the talk has been centred around strikers. i believe it's more important getting a creative midfielder (following zizou and nedved) than poaching for new strikers. DP, trez, palladino are doing fine. we also have the likes of miccoli at our disposal. talk of gerrard and lampard are in the air but thats just freaking unrealistic (BTW, lampard sucks big time!). moggi is gone so juve's transfer plans can't be much of a secret anymore as it used to be and i believe there's a hint of truth in these speculations. i need more interesting news please! i want to hear names like quaresma, messi, robinho...
deschamps may be no lippi but my expectations next season are very high. anyway, i can go on for days ranting about juve but i'll stop here. oh how i reminisce about lippi's juve of the late 90s when zidane was god. yes! his best years were at juve. the following link is proof:

yes, the project has kicked off but at a very slow pace. been quite busy with "real life" and work recently. but so far i've been working on the system and maths stuff and lots of ideas about the other stuff have been bouncing everywhere in my head. the project name has changed from "simulacra" to "simulacra x" only because i needed a cool second consonant to prefix my #defines, typedefs and class names. for example, my 3d vector class, now named SxVector3 is way cooler than SVector3 or SeVector3 (e = engine). also considering namespaces too. namespace Sx?
anyway, my major priority now is to install and set up a linux dev enviroment on my almost-3yr old laptop which hasn't been of much use recently. first, i have to buy a new battery for it, totally format and fdisk the whole hdd, then go through mess of installing/configuring a fast, bloat-free linux environment. it's been a since while i played with linux – dunno if my memory is still intact for the command line.

ok since it's j dilla month, to commemorate his passing, i have put up his masterpiece, Donuts, released just 3 days before his death. it'll be in the radio for the rest of february. it's probably the best hip hop instrumental album i've heard. my top 3 tracks in no order are: workinonit (2), lightworks (13), two can win (17).

the month of february is also dedicated to my man dilla. time does moves fast. i can't believe it's been a year since the beat master supremo passed away. j dilla’s rarely heard masterpiece "ruff draft" will be officially re-released as a deluxe 2-CD set with bonus vocal tracks, interludes and instrumental. some bastards have already leaked it. please don't be tempted to download it! wait till march and buy the album. most of the profits will go to his surviving mother. with dilla's one-year remembrance, a lot of tribute mixes are up and about the internet. the best of them has to be from the funky president, j. rocc. i've haven't been a huge fan of j. rocc but this mix is hot! and heavy! feel the legend of j dilla!

Stones Throw 10/10

to celebrate their 10yr anniversary, stones throw released a 2-part album titled Chrome Children which features tracks by its various talented members. the first part, which i anxiously waited for, was released october last year and needless to say it rocks. it wasn't as hot as i expected but it's a good way of sampling what the label is all about. if you can, and don't own it already, i recommend you buy it.

the second one has just been released today - free on the internet and i'm currently downloading it now as i write. you'd think it'd be stupid for a recording label to release albums for free but it only shows it's not about the money but about the fans, and the passion for the music. it's labels like these the music industry needs. labels that once a while show a token of appreciation to their fans. labels that deliver true music. thank you stones throw! grab it now here - just like the Liberation album, i can't guarantee it will be free for long.
on a side note, after various experiments concocting hip hop mixes, the supahvillain is planning a wussy mix for vals day. hopefully, it will be released a few days before vals day. first he needs to do the hard part - decide what tracks will make the list.
